Both Dung Kai-cheung and the novel’s English-language translator, Yau Wai-ping, are pleased to present this excerpt for non-commercial purposes related to the project. Vivi and Vera, first published in 2005, comprises 24 chapters—twelve narrating the family history of a Hong Kong novelist, and twelve narrating the journey of Vivi, a fictional character in a fictional world. Vivi eventually finds a way to cross into another world where she can meet her maker. Her arrival soothes, although it could never heal, the novelist's deepest loss.
